Biography
McCurry has been given some of the most prestigious awards in the industry, this including the Robert Capa Gold Medal, The National Press Photographers Award, and an unprecedented four first prize awards from the World Press Photo contest, and more awards then I can name
Steve McCurry is one of the most iconic voices in contemporary photography and has been for more then 30 years, with hundreds of magazine and book covers, over a dozen books and countless number of exhibitions all over the world.
McCurry was born in a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied film at Pennsylvania state University, before he started to work for a local newspaper. After several years of freelance work McCurry made is first of many trips to India. he traveled with no more then a bag of clothes and another bag full of film. He traveled across subcontinents, using his camera to explore the country.
after several months of traveling he found himself crossing the boarder in to Pakistan. thats when he met a group of refuges for Afghanistan, they then smuggled him across the boarder in to there country. just as the Russian invasion was closing there country to all western journalistst. He emerged in traditional dress, with full beard and weather-worn features after weeks with the Mujahideen, McCurry was the first person to show the world the images of the conflict in Afghanistan, putting a human face to the issue in everybodys mind. Since then McCurry has gone on to create stunning images from over six continents and endless countries. His work covers conflicts, vanishing cultures, ancient traditions and contemporary culture alike-yet always retains the human element that made his celebrated image of the Afghan girl such a powerful image.
I choose Steve McCurry as one of my photographers a I find some of this work to be intriguing and shocking in many different ways.
Examples of Steve McCurry's work
I like how he portrays such strong emotion in his images and how something so simple can create so many different thoughts and ideas showing the conflict of the country and the affects it has on the families that have lost loved ones and even a charred photo could bring joy if found.
I like the contrast in this image how you think someone who holds a gun is strong and powerful. it shows the world we live in is not a safe place for any age, the young boy shows fear and desperation in this image and it looks like he would like things to change even if it means taking his own life to do so.
I like how he has captured this community and shows us how it is isolated and separated from other communities but still survives. I like how he has shown in the distance an island/ land and shows how far away it is.
at first this was a little confusing but after a real look it tells me that no matter what life throws at people they find a way to carry on the bent over lady still manages to carry on with her everyday life even if it means having the bull to pull her worldly goods behind her in a cart.
Influence
By looking at this photographer I think it did give me some inspiration for my contrast photos and help me focus on the surrounding of my focal points.
I think that the image above i took links to some of steve McCurrys work as she portrays some of the emotions which he reflects withing some of his images. I think by studies his work he helped me to capture images which show strong emotion.
Summary
Overall I liked looking at Steve McCurry and found his work interesting I think he is a good photographer to look at and study. I believe he shows strong emotion and can put across a message within his images.
