Photographer Research- Corinne Day

Biography

Corinne day is a British photographer who has had a great influence on photography in the 90s.
Day often formed long and close relationships with many of her models (her most famous being Kate Moss), which have resulted with candid and intimate portraits. Her most notable photograph of Moss is in the 3rd Summer of Love edition for the FACE magazine in 1990. Days  illustrations in the lifestyle and fashion magazines of the 90s, were come to be known as grunge and grew into an international style. For the following seven years Corinne Day spent much of her own time taking photographs for her first book, Diary (Kruse Verlag, 2000), an intense personal eye witness record of her life and friends. Corinne Day continues to take photographs for fashion magazines. She is regularly hired for jobs by British, Italian and Japanese Vogue. she has had her work  exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Modern, Saatchi Gallery, The Science Museum, The design Museum, Photographers Gallery, Gimpel Fils London and included in The Andy Warhol exhibition at the Whitney Museum NY.

Why I chose this photographer

I chose Corinne day to research in further depth as i think she had multiple different interesting projects which I can look into and explore to expand my photography ideas. I all so I find her an inspiration as she was self taught photographer.

My favourite aspect of this image is the posture and emotion portrayed through the model and how it relates to the scene of which she is in and adds the old and rustic feel of the image. I think this image holds so much detail and can show a great deal of emotion.

From my view i see this image in two halves. one the left side her top is covered in what appears to be paint and or dirt and her face is dark and shadowed and the right side of her top its cleaner and her face is much brighter and her hand is in a different position whist she is holding some of her hair. i think this creates a interesting contrasting within the image. i also like how the lighting has been used in this image to create the shadow affect on one side of her face.

I like how simple but strong and nice this image is. I like how she has been positioned and centred within the image and how her face portrays strong emotion. You can see that the model lacks make up and reflects natural beauty, this is one of my favourite images by Corinne day.

The black and white effect given to this images adds to the overall relaxed feel of the photo. i like how a model who you would normally see on a run away with expensive clothes and make up is on an average sofa dressed in a baggy jumper, sloughed across and in my mind creates this image of her watching TV. i like it how an image can make me think about what is beyond what i can see.

Influence

Within my own work Corinne day has influenced me in the way I take my photos and has influenced me in how I consider the formal elements and has made me appreciate the use of tone/ the effect of  black and white much more. As a photographer I feel that she is one of the people who has focused on the natural beauty and I can see many messages being put across withing her photos. Corinne Day also uses what appears to scenery which is available and doesn't appear to be set up and faked for the image, I like this about her images and would like to reflect this in some of my work.

I think that the image to the left is of a similar style to Corinne day and does reflect her work. And is an example of how she had an influence within my work.
