Connecting Essay, 5

Internet Photograph
In the selected image the shape of which the signs hold help to display and guide people on a direction to take. This formal element helps to create the sense of direction with in the image. The detail displayed on the signs show a distance and a destination. I find it interesting how the image has captured one side of the post however in the image you can slightly see how another two directions are given. Creating the idea that this is the heavy side of which most of them are positioned. Reflecting the majority of destinations worth people being notified where they are to be in a general direction of left side of the photographers positioning. I find that the photographer has also chosen to capture an image with many focal points which could attract to a variety of  people. They have done this by keeping the image in a clear focus allowing all the writing to be capable of reading. Allowing people viewing the image to relate personally and link it to a previous experience of a place they have visited, where they currently live or a desired destination. Also the image has been taken looking up which could relate to a religious view or aspect for some people admiring the photo.

I like how this particular image uses shape, colour and a contrast in a variety of ways to create this which holds a strong sense of journey and development. The contrast of nature and a man made object help to show a development of time and progression. I like the how strong contrast help the sign post to stand out very effectively in the image. I think the trees line the top of the image and help to create a interesting piece instead of a piece with focus on the pure writing on the sign. I think by showing two signs and one slight one it reflects a sense of choice and decision.

Connection of photographs

I think the connection between these images are the way they both portray the decisions and way we choose to travel in life. It shows me there are many paths and options available to us and sometimes by just taking the time we should look at the bigger picture and realise that life has more pathways then we think. I think that contrast is also a key part of helping to create these interesting images. The shape of the objects help to show the direction and options due to the shapes we relate with a way in which to follow and how they guide us.

Internet Photograph
I got this image from the Internet and liked the way the photographer has captured the flower in its natural surrounding's with brightness and full on colour.  It shows to me the beautiful world around us and how nature can form beautiful wonders for this earth. What I liked most about this picture is the depth involved and displaying the surrounds. This depth helps to highlight the contrast of which is created from the plants due to the bright colours of there flowers.

Own Photograph

I took to represent contrast within the green and red of the flowers of the image. I think it shows how nature can recreate a beauty over and over again without struggle and how we simple pass by it without acknowledging it. The distance and depth in this image help highlight how this pattern is easy to recreate for nature and often occurs. The strong colour and contrast along with the depth shows helps to display a interesting piece shows true aspects of nature.

Connection of photographs
I think the connection in these two images are the way in which they have focused on the central flower to capture the eyes of people and make them value the world around them. Also by the way in which they both have a repeating pattern showing how nature can recreate this pattern without fail. By using bright colours it can reflect happiness and standout more then if it was black and white. the boldness of colour also helps to create a strong contrast in these images. The depth in both pieces as well in my opinion create a more interesting piece and help create a main focal point and in this case a specific flower of which the focus wants to be aimed at.

The use of movement and reflection in this image provide an interesting feel to the image whilst creating multiple ideas and views by people admiring the image. I think the link of movement and reflection used in this image help to portray the idea of a fast paced environment. Displaying the difficultly and only quick snapshots we see of people due to the speed of which we feel is required to succeed in current society. Helping to show how events and people pass us by without truly being able to give them an accurate identity or without an understanding of people.

Own Photograph

The image was taken for the topic refection, however movement and colour is also represented in an interesting way here. The blur of colours and objects help to create this speed and motion displayed in the image. The reflection created here almost shows an overlap of two different images. Although i think this works well and helps to build on to create an interesting piece. The way in which these formal elements are used in this image I feel help to create an idea that we move in such a rush and almost as if we have no time to stop. I like how the directions of people's feet all face one way and the people almost appear to be in line and following a path. This aspect along with the dress sense and shoes suggest they are teenagers and show how they speed past one other without thinking and consideration.

Connection of photographs

The connection between these two images are how they both show and link the formal elements. I also think these images also have an underlining negative message within them, this being the quick speed of which we travel through life and take for granted. I like how these images could however be interpreted in different ways by different people. Both images also show a overlap of individual pieces and help to build a interesting photo involving great detail and creativity.

Pre-completion Evaluation

As I begin to complete this project I feel happy with the work I have done so far. I feel that my overall skills have improved throughout this project and I have developed my understanding within computer skills and my camera. I started this project with very little skills and some very basic knowledge.

I think I have overall progressed well throughout the past couple of months and have learnt many new skills and techniques which have massively helped within my work for this project.

I think I did struggle with getting to grips with some of the things we had to do for this project. I think I found photo joiner quite challenging and I think I took more time then necessary as I kept adjusting and altering the image until I was happy with it.

Evaluation
I found that by shooting Mapplethorpe outside you could try and use different backgrounds and be more experimental with your photos, unlike in the studio. I went out for location Mapplethorpe after I had shoot in the studio so I had multiple ideas and had tried various different things in the studio to see if they could be linked to Mapplethorpe and his style. However at some points I found my self repeating the same positions and angles with my models as I had done in the studio.

Most of my Mapplethorpe images I have changed into black and white.  My studying Mapplethorpe I found that most of his work was in black and white and the most popular ones definitely was. I like how I took this photo portrait although I saw little of his work in this fashion I think it works well for this image. I like how this image has a slight depth within it as well. I think the brick wall in the background made a nice change to a block colour and had a good effect on the image.

This is my favorite image out of my Mapplethorpe location as I think Mapplethorpe was able to portray great emotion In a way which wasn't to complex, I believe this image shows this. I also really like the position of the person and how the background is filled with the brick wall. I think black and white worked perfectly with this image and by changing it into this effect improved the overall look of it. I think this image can be related well to the style of Mapplethorpe and his work.

Progression

If I was to continue with this Mapplethorpe work I would like to take more images in which people are laughing or involve more probe or the scene around.

Straight Prints- Mapplethorpe Studio

Work Diary- Mapplethorpe studio

Evaluation
I was set the task to research and create Mapplethorpe inspired images. my first Mapplethorpe inspired shoot was in the studio at first I was stuck for ideas of how to create images which are my own unique images however are Mapplethorpe based. Once I was in the studio I found it to be one of the more interesting topics. I like how we was able to fill the frame of the image in different ways and experiment with the style of Mapplethorpe. I liked using the block colour backgrounds as many of Mapplethorpe's images was simple with little detail within the background at all. I found that the white worked best with the people I was taking images for.

I captured this image as she was laughing. I really like the way she is just slightly off centre and her posture. I like the care free and happiness which is portrayed through this image and feel that although very little of Mapplethorpe's work done this I still think that the way in which the image has been taken and the over photo could related to some of his work. I changed this image into black and white as it gave it more of an effect and suites the image well.

I think this is my most successful image from my studio Mapplethorpe shoot. This image is one of my favourite due to how her face appears emotionless and the composition on the image. I really like how her head and shoulders fills the frame and how her thick curly hair divides the harsh background and her face. I did experiment and see how this image looked in black and white however I felt that it was better in colour and liked the colour contrasts within the image.

Progression

If I was to shoot Mapplethorpe in the studio again I would like to try more straight on portraits of people and maybe try and add some props.

Image Bank- Mapplethorpe Portraits

I choose some of the above images as an overall
representation of mapplethorpe's portraits work. I looked at these images to give me inspiration as to how I will portray my study of his work. When looking at his work the main idea we was studying was his composition.
